The Story Behind EQ Academy

When I was learning how to master music, I said yes to every project I could get my hands on. Some of the mixes were great. Most weren’t. But that didn’t matter. I just needed the practice.

I’d sit there for hours, trying different EQ moves, chasing a sound in my head that I didn’t quite know how to reach yet. Sometimes I’d make progress. Sometimes I’d get stuck. And sometimes I made things worse.

But that’s how I learned. Trial and error. Over and over again.

But slowly, something started to shift.

The Turning Point: Reference Tracks and Repetition

Everything changed the moment I started using reference tracks. Lining up a mix against a professionally mastered track, level matching by ear (because we hadn't built REFERENCE yet), comparing tone, punch, clarity, it gave me something to aim for.

Each comparison was a lesson. Every attempt to match that commercial sound trained my ears just a little more. And as I iterated again and again, my instincts sharpened. What once took hours now took minutes. My decisions grew more confident, more precise.

But here’s the catch: I could only do this when I had a new track to master.

That was the bottleneck. I had to wait for a client to send me something. Or a friend to throw me a bone. I was eager to learn, desperate to improve, but I was at the mercy of other people’s schedules.

Producers working on their own music? They have it even harder. You spend days (or weeks) writing a track, and then finally get to the EQ and mastering stage. One shot. One chance to train that part of your brain. Then it’s back to the start.

No repetition. No flow. Just a long, slow crawl toward progress.

And that’s the problem.

The Problem No One Talks About

We’ve built an industry obsessed with gear, plug-ins, and glossy tutorials... but the one thing that actually makes you better?

Repetition.

The ability to train your ears, over and over again, with clear feedback and no waiting around.

Think about how a guitarist practices scales. Or how a singer does vocal runs every day. Now imagine if they could only practice once a month, or only when a friend handed them an instrument. Sounds absurd, right?

But that’s the reality for producers. Especially when it comes to EQ and mastering. You don’t get enough reps.

The Birth of EQ Academy

At Mastering The Mix, we’ve always focused on helping producers improve, with plugins, eBooks, videos, and more. But none of it solved this core issue: there was no way to train EQ like a muscle.

So we built EQ Academy.

A gamified, hands-on, interactive training tool that gives producers unlimited opportunities to sharpen their ears. You can load it up and start practicing instantly, no need to write a new track, wait for a mix, or beg for stems. You get repetition. Real feedback. Real improvement.

And the best part? It’s fun. It feels like a game. But it’s training you in the exact same way I and countless other engineers learned the craft. Only now, you can do in weeks what took us years.

Oh, it's also free.

The Future of Learning EQ

EQ Academy isn’t just another plugin or tutorial. It’s a mindset shift. A new way to learn. A solution to a problem that’s held so many producers back for so long.

If you’re serious about improving your ears, if you want to make faster progress and finally feel like you’re mastering your EQ decisions, this is your moment.

I built EQ Academy because I believe in your potential. I’ve lived the struggle. And now, I’ve built the tool I wish I had when I started.

Let’s make sure the next generation of producers doesn’t have to wait years to get good.
