REFERENCE 3 Overview: Everything You Need To Know

What Is REFERENCE 3?

REFERENCE 3 helps you get your mixes and masters sounding closer to the professional tracks you love. Load it on your master bus, import your favourite songs as references, and REFERENCE shows you exactly how your tonal balance, stereo width, dynamics, and loudness compare, then tells you what to change to close the gap.

It is built around one simple idea: instead of guessing in an untreated room, you compare against records you already know sound great, with the loudness matched so the comparison is always fair.

How REFERENCE 3 Works

Load REFERENCE on your master bus, after your metering plugin and before any headphone or speaker correction. It needs to be on a stereo channel so it can analyse width and phase. From there, the workflow is fast:

1. Build your Reference Library. Import your go-to songs across the genres you work in. REFERENCE analyses each one and stores its tonal balance, stereo width, dynamics, and loudness so it always has a benchmark ready.

2. Let Smart Reference Tracks pick the right ones. Press analyse and REFERENCE automatically suggests the best-matching references from your library for the track you are working on, with the loudest section already looped.

3. Compare fairly. Level Match is on by default, so your track and your references are matched in perceived loudness. Louder always sounds “better” for the first few seconds, so this is the single most important step in any honest comparison.

4. See what to change. The Master Scope shows the precise EQ moves, stereo width adjustments, phase issues, and over-compression between your mix and your reference. If you would rather read it than interpret a graph, Mix Instructor spells it out in plain words like “EQ: boost by 4 dB.”

5. Measure your progress. Match % quantifies how close you are across tonal balance, stereo, dynamics, and loudness. Anything above 80 is solid.

Key Features

Smart Reference Tracks — automatically suggests the four best-matching references from your library based on the track you are working on.

Reference Track Library — organise your personal library of go-to references inside the plugin, and star your favourites so they appear first.

Mix Descriptor Tags — an instant, at-a-glance summary of each reference’s tonal balance, stereo width, dynamics, and loudness compared to most professional releases.

Master Scope — brings every visual analysis tool into one display: the Level Line for EQ, the Stereo Width Display, phase analysis, over-compression detection, and Match %.

Level Line — shows the exact EQ boosts and cuts needed to bring your tonal balance closer to the reference, using perceptual frequency weighting so it focuses on what you actually hear. Aim for within ±3 dB.

Mix Instructor — turns the Master Scope into simple written instructions across low, mid, and high bands, updating in real time.

Mix Balance — suggests gain adjustments for your vocals, drums, music, and bass to match your reference.

Phase & Over-Compression Detection — highlights frequency-specific phase issues that weaken punch and mono compatibility, and shows where your mix has less punch than the reference.

Level Match — instant, accurate loudness matching for fair comparisons, with options to match to your original, the quietest track, or -14 LUFS short-term (comparable to streaming normalisation).

Track Align — automatically syncs alternate versions of the same song so you can switch between them seamlessly.

REFSEND — a companion plugin that lets you A/B an individual plugin, an FX chain, or your entire mastering chain, with true loudness matching. You can also use it to reference music from YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Output Options — monitor in stereo, mono, mid, or side.
